Article: Why you can't go wrong with a Scandi coastal look

Why you can't go wrong with a Scandi coastal look

Coastal style - like Scandi – never dates, so when you put the two together, you've a timeless look that soothes and relaxes. Think the palest of skies, the ombre shades of the sea, plenty of white and natural materials…

We see lots of lovely coastal homes in Simply Scandi, as well as designs and pieces from favourite Scandi brands, so we thought we'd share a few of our favourites. Here's how to work a Scandi coastal look in your own home.

1 Start with your inspiration

We love a 'mood' shot at Simply Scandi, in fact we always use one as a springboard for our regular Palette feature each print issue. This Scandi beach house in Tisvilde Hegn on Denmark's Northen Zealand captures the mood and colour palette perfectly: soft blues, whites, hints of blush and natural materials - all with a slightly faded, sun-bleached feel.

2 Think about textures

A Scandi coastal look just loves texture. Think sand, sea, driftwood, rattan, seagrass, linen… anything relaxed and natural. A large rattan basket, ready for trips to the beach, is a great Scandi-coastal prop – just pop in a linen throw and position in your hallway, at the end of your bed or sofa, or hanging from a peg rail. Easy Scandi coastal hack!

3 Merge inside and out

Scandi coastal style works brilliantly inside and out, as Yvonne's Norwegian cottage from our Vol 18 Summer issue proves. With doors that open from the living room directly onto a terrace, with its sea views, this rattan chair is a dreamy place to sit. A striped throw in coastal neutrals draped over the arm echoes the natural palette outside.

4 Swap white for blue

Bring in coastal blue into your kitchen with the palest of shades reserved for cabinetry and bar stools, just as Marlene has done in her Danish summerhouse. This "misty blue" as Marlene describes, works well with the washed pine floors, echoing the view from her terrace.

5 Make storage Scandi

With a glazed cabinet, you can show of coastal-style textures and even sweet treats. Use a mix of rattan, glass and ceramics, bringing simplicity to your shelves. Try to avoid the tempatation to over-fill such a cabinet, hiding any clutter behind closed cabinet doors.

6 Enjoy any view of the sea

Yvonne's kitchen window is almost like a piece of art, with the fishing house at the end of the jetty perfectly framed. If you don't have a sea view, then make sure you've a few art prints or photographs on display, helping you daydream of days spent shore-side.

7 Add touches of coastal to neutrals

A Scandi neutral palette is perfect for adding elements of coastal style to, with a simply stripe throw, a sea-blue cushion or a rug made up of shingle-sand shades. These are easy pieces to swap come the cosy season, when we look to hygge-down at home. Owner Sofia was careful not to include too much heavy or dominating furniture in her summer cabin retreat on the Stockholm archipelago.

8 Find your Scandi coastal patterns

We love a blue-and-white pattern, such as a gingham, stripe or ditsy stripe. It's a great way of giving a neutral bedroom all the coastal feels. Balance the patterns with white linen and choose similar scale for a pattern look that's still delicate.

9 Start a Scandi coastal gallery

Capture moments, frame holiday memories, or get creative and paint your own seascape – creating your Scandi coastal art collection makes a wonderful, inspirational feature behind your bed or above the sofa. When building a gallery wall, try to keep to one or two wood tones or colours for the frames to keep things simple. This collection from Swedish print brand Desenio, has scenes reminiscent of blue water and sun-kissed sands, helping to create a home you can relax in after a day of swimming, sailing, and sunbathing.

10 Find your peg rail moment

No beach house would be complete without somewhere to display treasures, and a peg rail, with space to hang baskets, shell creations and more, creates a great Scandi coastal display. Better still, hang on tongue-and-grove panelling to really bring the look home.
