Style a nature-inspired Scandi tablescape

Inspired by the forest, Julie Wettergren’s Danish apartment takes on a very magical feel at this time of year. She shares how to pull her look together, using foraged finds, a delicate palette and whimsical additions

Jewellery designer Julie Wettergren gets inspiration for Christmas from everywhere, and it’s not easy to put her finger on what it is each time. One year it could be the colour of a hand-dipped candle, another year a certain flower, or (like last year) a large, weathered branch from a cork tree from a local florist that became the starting point for her Christmas home. Julie lives in an apartment in Hellerup, in the suburbs of Copenhagen, which she shares with her two children and rabbit Pongo.

We asked Julie to share her Christmas style secrets:

Tell us about your Christmas table

I am really drawn to nature for both my home and work, which is really special. This is where I find peace on my long walks. Nature therefore fills more and more of my Christmas with each passing year. When I saw the old cork branch, hooked and with the most beautiful bark, I was inspired to create a forest winter wonderland
in earthy tones, with white and light shades as a counterweight so the expression would not be too heavy. The branch hangs above my dining table, with lots of twinkling lights and stars lighting up my Christmas table below beautifully. We’ve also collected lots of pine cones from the forest floor and used crisp white amaryllis and seedheads in glass vases to create a centrepiece on the table below the branch. The wooden bench is made comfortable with fluffy sheepskins, and right outside the window are flocks of spruce trees so close that they are almost like guests at the Christmas table.

What about your Christmas tree?

My tree is decorated with vintage glass balls, heirlooms and funky glass candies. But I’ve also hinted at forest adventures in the tree’s pot, with a base of moss and a few red deer, which have a view of the surrounding Christmas gifts.

How would you describe your Christmas palette?

I’ve chosen a palette that my eye likes to look at, which is tonal rather than contrasting. Both my homemade Advent wreath and wall wreath are in nude, coral and pink with gentle earthy tones that also match the coloured candles in the living room and, of course, the well-covered forest winter wonderland dining table.

How will you spend Christmas at home?

I love everything about Christmas, and it’s nice to go for a little winter hibernation and just have fun as a family at home. Therefore, it means something extra for me to create a Christmas home that is connected visually in both style and colour.
