The design shops of Copenhagen
Set in picturesque surroundings, the Danish capital is a design shopping Mecca. From iconic Scandi classics to ‘New Nordic’ accessories, beautiful ceramics and quirky local pieces, this wonderful city offers something for everyone
“Every now and again I set aside a day to go shopping in Copenhagen,” says Niki Brantmark, an ex-Londoner now living and working in Malmö, and an award-winning blogger at myscandinavianhome.com. Niki is our go-to expert when it comes to exploring Scandinavian cities and knows exactly where to shop.
“Visiting Copenhagen is a trip I really look forward to – setting my alarm early to catch the train over the Øresund bridge in time for breakfast (a coffee and a Danish pastry, of course), before immersing myself in everything the Danish capital has to offer: fabulous design, wonderful eateries and inspiring, ultra-hip locals – in a beautiful setting. What’s not to love?”
1) GUBI, Møntergade 19, 1140 Copenhagen
“Bolster yourself with a strong coffee and seek out the GUBI store,” recommends Niki. “It’s a visual design universe occupying an awe-inspiring 400 sqm of space. Located in the heart of Copenhagen’s shopping district, the flagship store is housed in a 19th-century building. ‘The space was hand-picked for its strong character, sense of history, beautiful interior and for providing a unique framework from which to explore new ideas,’ GUBI’s chief marketing officer, Marie Kristine Schmidt, shares.”
2) Paustian, Niels Hemmingsens Gade 24, 1153 Copenhagen
“No visit to Copenhagen would be complete without a stop at the Paustian concept store,’’ says Niki. “Located in a former bank dating back to 1868, the magnificent design emporium opened its doors in 2018, and today, the awe-inspiring period features are interspersed with Nordic and international furniture, and accessories from brands such as Vitra, Cassina and Warm Nordic. Keep an eye out for design talks and exhibitions, and treat yourself to a throw or cushion from the Paustian SOFT collection designed by Danish textile designer Helene Blanche. Or set your sights on something larger like the iconic Fringe lamp or the fabulous FRIED EGG chair. Having represented some of the most celebrated and renowned designers since 1964, you won’t be short of something to take home…”
3) Ferm Living, Kuglegårdsvej 1-5, 1434 Copenhagen K
Nestled among pretty canals with sailing boats and quirky houseboats, and just over the pedestrian bridge from famous 'Nyhavn' canal, you'll find Ferm Living - one of my absolute favourite homeware stores. Occupying a historical building that dates back to 1770, the store offers an entire universe of beautiful items for the home, arranged in a series of inspiring room settings. Shop here for small everyday items with a Danish twist such as plates, glasses, vases and rugs. Or take it as an opportunity to explore larger pieces such as tables, chairs and outdoor furniture. Either way, you're bound to feel truly inspired and won't leave empty handed!
4) Frama Studio Store, Fredericiagade 57, 1310 Copenhagen
“Take a stroll to Nyboder, a lively neighbourhood and part of the royal quarter, and delight your senses in the Frama Studio Store,” says Niki. “Formerly the site of St Pauls Apothek pharmacy, the beautiful building dates back to 1878 and was recently transformed into a store, exhibition and event space, as well as a neighbourhood eatery. Browse its homewares and much more but, before you leave, make sure you take a seat in the eatery – Apotek 57 – beside the locals, and tuck into home-made seasonal dishes and freshly brewed coffee served on Frama’s own dinner and glassware.”
5) HAY House, Østergade 61, 2 Copenhagen
“You can't visit Copenhagen without climbing the stairs to Hay House in the heart of the city. Founded by Mette and Rolf Hay, the Danish brand works with designers from all over the world and prides itself on creating high quality products with a fresh take on traditional design - often in vibrant and playful on-trend colours. Expect to find everything from toothbrushes and waste paper baskets to lamps and sofas in this magnificent store!”
