Editor Jen Morgan shares her love for cushions and how they can make a Scandi home
You could say they are my weakness when it comes to interiors: I mean who doesn’t love a squishy, tactile cushion? (Well perhaps not Mr Simply Scandi!). When it comes to giving a home an instant Scandi-style lift though, you can’t go far wrong with one – or let’s be honest – multiple cushions. They are perfect for adding colour, texture and visual layers to a scheme.
Here are my tips for building your own Scandi cushion collection…
1 Cushions are an easy style fix
Cushions are that one easy, affordable pick-me-up that can revive a tired sofa, give a bedroom an instant makeover, or make you use your spaces differently – try a cushion on a wide window ledge for an instant seat with a view.
2 Think about the cushion inner
More and more cushions are being sold sans inner, which is great news for sustainability, but it’s worth investing in good-quality feather pads. These can make even the cheapest of covers look more plush and inviting.
3 Style with the seasons
Think of your cushion collection in seasons; cosier textures, like sheepskin and faux fur, are great for hygge-inspired spaces during the colder months, but as we head into spring, perhaps swap these with lighter fabrics, such as linen and cotton. Likewise, try a new accent colour for spring/summer – soft green cushions work brilliantly with natural ones, bringing nature in.

4 Play with shape and size
Standard square cushions are 40cm x 40cm. Team with larger ones, ideal for dressing a bed, and smaller cushions, perfect as hero moments on your sofa. Don’t forget about bolster cushions either. I love the way Pernille has used different size-cushions to dress her bed in her Danish home.
5 Be cushion-ready
Pop a few cushions next to your back door (in a basket for top Scandi style marks), ready for when the sun shines and you can enjoy a fika moment outside. Look for bench cushions if you need something bigger.
6 Try a ruffle
Give a new edge to your cushions, with frills and ruffles big news for spring/summer. Eitehr keep to the same fabric for both cushion and ruffle, or mix and match for a more relaxed look.

7 Take them floor level
For extra seating in your living room, large floor cushions, which can be stacked when not needed, are ideal. Look for boxy-shaped ones that fit neatly into a corner of your room, and experiment with a few different colours or textures for visual interest.
8 Go for a cushion makeover
Try a few mini makeovers to make your cushions more relaxed in style. A chunky button sewn through front-to-back can give a linen cushion a lovely soft shape, while trims are an easy change. And don't shy away from pattern – you can be a pattern lover and a Scandophile as designer Cathy Nordström shares.
9 Look three-dimensional
Add a new dimension to a modern Scandi sofa with the future classic, the Knot cushion from Design House Stockholm. It’s made of long knitted strings knotted into a compact yet soft cushion.
10 Add to chairs
Don’t forget dining chairs and benches, many of which could benefit from a comfy cushion. In keeping with our Scandi vibe, add sheepskin ones, or try small linen cushions in different shades of one colour in a kitchen nook.
