5 things we love about our Vol 23 Autumn cover home (and you will too)

A light and bright kitchen with a close connection to nature must be high on every Scandi fan's wish-list, and it's easy to see why in this Norwegian space

Our cover for Vol 23 Autumn features a simple, beautiful kitchen that echoes the rest of the home. Belonging to Pernille and Jan who moved to the countryside in search of a quieter lifestyle, we loved the mix of materials used in the kitchen – elm and marble – as well as the light flooding in. We felt it had just the right balance of late summer days and early autumn vibes for a great cover. But there's plenty more to inspire from the rest of their home. Here are a few details you might want to make note of…

1 The use of grain

In addition to that beautiful elm kitchen, Pernille and Jan have used plenty of natural wood – even the walls are lined in natural pine, with the beautiful grain almost acting as a wallpaper to the space. Classic Hans J Wenger Wishbone CH24 chairs surround the table – elegant yet simple in shape. We also love the warmer wooden tones of the panelled ceiling, which helps to define the dining area in the open-plan space (which was created by the couple).

2 The careful curation of everyday essentials

We love the way everyday things add quiet texture to the space. A large glass bottle with a wooden cork from Sanatorium sits alongside a sleek Audo carafe, balanced by a tall Raumgestalt cutting board from Bolia and a beautifully crafted broom by Poppy Lawman.

3 The subtle use of pattern

Pernille's used simple pattern to add interest to the couple's natural, wood-rich bedroom. A clean, crisp gingham duvet cover in a chocolate brown gives warmth, while a delicate embroidered cushion is the perfect partner to a Parolan rattan chair.

4 The way indoor furniture moves outside

Pernille and Jan sell seasonal vegetables and hand-tied bouquets from their farmhouse under the brand Haugerud Hage, with a large cutting garden blooming beside a kitchen garden and a green house filled with cherry tomatoes, cucumbers, aubergines and jalapeños. Old tables and chairs in weathered paint colours mean there's always a space to gather and appreciate the fruits of their labour.

5 Pernille's love of her garden

Pernille’s real joy comes from learning as much about growing plants and uncovering the secrets of garden design. “There is something deeply satisfying about taking what I’ve learned in the classroom and putting it into practice in the soil. Looking ahead, this is exactly what I want to fill my days with as I get older. Living a slower, more connected life that’s close to nature," she says.
