BTS style secrets of our Vol 20 Winter cover home

Welcome to the start of a hygge-filled winter, when your home becomes a place full of warmth, love and seasonal joy, as days are spent preparing for Christmas

I love being at home at this time of year, as I slowly add 'Christmas' inside and out. But of course, it's also the season to layer, so blankets are upacked alongwide woolly jumpers, as my home becomes texture-rich. Our cover home for Simply Scandi Vol 20 Winter has all of the hygge feels, as Caroline creates a sanctuary from the cold Swedish winter for her family. For our cover shot, there was just something so lovely about her kitchen-dining space, with its view through to the hallway beyond, but there's plenty more to love around her home…

1 Caroline's soft palette used in her kitchen

When Caroline and her husband Henrik bought their home, just outside Gothenburg, the kitchen was painted off-white with a red checked wallpaper. Today, it's been brush-painted in Grey Moss by Little Greene, which creates a lovely warm mood. The woodwork and doors are painted in Borrowed Light by Farrow & Ball. Such soft shades work really well with the oak floor and furniture.

2 Her choice of fabrics

In the living room, a plush velvet sofa from IKEA is kept practical with plenty of linen and knitted cushions and a shapely quilt, protecting the sofa seat – it's where the children can curl up. Caroline describes her style as "ever evolving", where pieces are often moved around, with smaller items given space to "speak"; the calm colour palette ties everything together.

3 Her bold wallpapered ceiling feature

One of Caroline's favourite additions, is the wallpapered ceiling in the dining room – a feature that never fails to impress guests. The wallpaper design is called Waldemar by Boråaspeter. While some design features are more individual – like the ceiling – the couple do try to honour the history of the house too, being built in 1901. "We try to keep as true to the house's time as possible, while adding our own touches too," she says.

4 That heart-of-the-home stove

In the kitchen, a stove provides warmth and welcome all-day-long at this time of year, but especially at breakfast, when a simply linen tablecloth and beautiful rustic tableware help set the scene. Caroline's added that nod to Christmas with a few festive branches in a sturdy vase and some oversized decorations placed table-top.

5 The beautiful decorations collected over time

Just like the renovation of her home, sourcing Christmas decorations can't be rushed for Caroline. Her collection is mismatched but picks out colours from her home with the addition of some shimmering metallics. "At first, we thought we'd be finished in a couple of years, but we've realised this house is an ongoing project," says Caroline. "It grows with us – and that feels right."
