Style secrets – Vol 17 cover home

This spring, make it personal with ideas for creating your perfect Scandi space inspired by our cover home

With a keen eye for design, Jette has invited light and air into the Sixties summerhouse she shares with her husband and their two teenage sons near Vejby Beach in Denmark, creating a welcoming summer retreat from city life. Here are a few of our favourite style secrets from her home…

1. That simple backdrop that lets colours pop

Jette wanted to keep the character of the summerhouse, which was built in the 1960s, so she used lots of natural materials and a simple, light colour scheme. It's furnished with items that have character or history. The painted table was found on dba.dk, with chairs from Please Wait to be Seated and a bench from JYSK. The yellow stool, found on the terrace when they bought the house, was painted yellow, bringing the sunshine in from outside. On the wall, a hanging made by Jette, uses fabric scraps, old cushion covers, tote bags and worn-out clothes.

2. Jette's collections, curated for colour, texture and 'just because'…

"I have a particular weakness for pitchers and bowls," admits Jette. "At flea markets, I just can't resist them, even though I have plenty. I also love finding textured wicker baskets that can double as storage." Her collections add colour too, with yellow, blue and duck egg all featuring.

3. The way furniture gets a new life

Throughout Jette's summerhouse, furniture sourced online, at flea markets or repurposed from other spaces stands pround – and completely at home. In the living area, the day bed came from their city home. Made by a carpenter, it had belonged to their youngest son, but now looks completely at home dressed with cushions from Merci. The armchair was bought from Retro Karma on Instagram. There are a few new pieces too, such as the IKEA coffee table and OYOY Living pouffe.

4. Her simple displays that capture memories

On a charming coat rack, bought on Instagram, hangs a pair of binoculars inherited from Jette's father. Although rarely used, she feels they belong in a summerhouse: "Who knows, maybe one day they might spark an interest in birdwatching," she says. The shirt, with its soft watercolours, captures the colours used throughout the summerhouse effortlessly – a little like Jette's Scandi style.

5. The way Jette's influenced outside

The garden is a communal space for the whole family, though they each use it differently – lounging in deckchairs, playing table tennis, reading, or Jette's favourite, planting flowers in pots. The potting bench was bought on dba.dk, with the pots containing lavender, geraniums, verbena and cosmos. The picture was made from driftwood, which Jette collected on the beach.
