BTS style secrets of our vol 18 Summer home

It almost feels as if our summer issue is in sync with real life and sunny days, which is making our Scandi hearts sing as it's such a wonderful time of year to be at home

And who wouldn't want to spend time here, at the Danish home of Emily Salomon, with its neutral palette, natural textures and soft fabrics? When choosing a home for our cover story for a summer issue, sometimes we head outside, or "one-cautious-toe-out" with a conservatory, but for our new Vol 18 Simply Scandi, we found ourselves just wanting to sit and relax in Emily's living room, with its soft, romantic Scandi scheme, complete with flowers picked from her own garden. Of course, there's were plenty of other lovely options for the cover (yes we did try that conservatory) and plenty of pretty details. Here are a few of our favourite shots from Emily's home – some that you won't see in print…

1 A greenhouse to potter

Emily had always dreamt of a greenhouse, a space where she could have a daybed and a few chairs to sit and relax, but as the gardening bug struck, her greenhouse has become a different sanctuary, where she focuses on nurturing flowers and vegetables before planting out. The greenhouse is from The Greenery.

2 A pretty summer palette

Emily has used mainly neutrals to decorate each room, adding in touches of blush and pale blue. Creating a props moodboard of your Scandi home is a great way of seeing if you have the proportions just right. Gather up favourite pieces, fabrics and textures and shoot an overhead on your main flooring. This lovely snapshot of your home – like Emily's – can be changed each season by swapping some of the accessories.

3 A space for display (and storage)

The home's colour palette is kept neutral, with the contrasts provided through different materials such as wicker, linen, stone and, as here, sheepskin on the tufted armchair, the Petra from &Tradition. The display cabinet is a vintage find and filled with Emily's favourite books and treasures.

4 A splashback of dreams

When it came to the kitchen, Emily fell in love with Calacatta Oro marble at MarmoMarmo, so the couple saved where they could in order to afford it. They kept the base units, swapping the kitchen fronts and handles, rather than replace the whole kitchen. The walls are painted in Humble Yellow from Jotun.

5 A simple plan for accessories

An eclectic collection of tableware has found its way to the couple's dining table, with a bowl from a flea market in France, as well as plates from 1616/arita Japan and vintage Wedgwood. The flowers are from Emily's garden in delicate shades that complement her home, bringing the outdoors in.
